A new sport has reached the shores of Lake Superior. It’s called microfishing. Think birdwatching, but with tiny fish. Quite a change from trying to catch the largest possible fish!
You can read all about it if you’re a subscriber to Lake Superior Magazine. My story is in the October/November 2025 issue. I learned about this unique sport when I interviewed a local department of natural resources fisheries biologist for a different story. Once I retired, I had time to pursue a magazine story. The sport is practiced all over the world.

Congrats on the publication, Marie!
Thanks, Eilene! It was a fun story to write since the sport is so niche.
Time for other pursuits is another advantage of retirement. Congratulations on the publication!
Thank you, Jo Nell. It’s always nice to see one’s name in print.
Congrats on your magazine story.
Thank you, Diana! I forgot to mention that I had a source for the story lined up but that fell through. Then it took me months to find another one because microfishing isn’t exactly popular yet. But it all turned out well in the end.
I feel for the poor minnows.
I do, too. I should have mentioned that the anglers use very tiny hooks that cause little damage and that it’s a catch and release sport.
I should have put a smiley face in my comments. But to know there are tiny hooks does make me smile. I guess I just remember fondly our attempts to catch minnows with our hands in the shallows. 🙂🐠
Ah, I understand your drift now. Those emojis make all the difference. 🙂
Congrats on your article!
Thanks, Swabby! Lake Superior Magazine is one of my favorites as a contributor.
Congrats Marie! Maggie
Thanks, Maggie! I enjoyed accompanying the microfisher on his outing.
Congrats! Can I buy the magazine on the stand?
Yes, this issue should be out on news stands by now!
Congratulations! I’d not heard of microfishing before. Will read about it.
